female condom1
The female condom is method for protection from sexually transmitted diseases that is completely under the control of the female partner. Female sexual health can now be fully protected even if the man is not wearing a condom.

How does it work?

The female condom is a “plastic pouch” of sorts that lines a woman’s vagina.  It creates a barrier between the penis the the lining of the vagina and prevents microsopic pathogens from infecting the sexual organs.  Because it is closed at the cervical end it also helps to protect against unwanted pregnancy.
The inner ring at the closed end keeps it in place and seals off the cervix while the outer ring on the open end stays outside of the vagina and covers genitalia on the outside. Any type of lubricant (including those that are not water-based) can be used the safety or effectiveness will not be compromised.

Using the female condom effectively

follow the directions below, step-by-step:

First- Open the female condom’s package by tearing along one edge. If the condom itself is torn during opening, start again with a new one, as that condom is no longer effective.

Second-Take the condom out of the package and rub it between two fingers so that lubricant is distributed equally inside the condom.

Third- Squeeze the ring at the closed end of the condom between thumb and middle finger and push the condom all the way into your vagina with your index finger. Insert it as far as it will go until you can’t feel it with your finger.

Last- The second ring, at the open end, should remain outside of your vagina, resting against your outer vaginal lips. The condom should be open and straight within you, and not twisted.

Important points

When you have intercourse, you must hold the outer ring in place so that it doesn’t go into your vagina, and you must guide the penis into the condom within the vagina so that it doesn’t accidentally go between the condom and the vaginal wall; this will completely negate its effectiveness.

You must replace the condom after each act of sexual intercourse.

Once sexual intercourse is over, take the female condom out immediately to prevent pregnancy and STD transmission. Grab the outside ring and “twist” the condom so that no semen can spill out.
